Born 1606, Died 1669.One of the great Dutch painters and printmakers of the 17th century, Rembrandt van Rijn is best known for his expressive use of light and shadow (also called chiaroscuro) in his many portraits. Raised in Leiden, he studied with Pieter Lastman (1583-1633) in Amsterdam, then returned to Leiden around 1625 and set up shop as a teacher and portrait artist. Sometime between 1630 and 1632 Rembrandt relocated to Amsterdam, where he spent the rest of his career. Though he had his detractors (some of whom considered him coarse and "low born"), Rembrandt was successful and famous during his lifetime, though he fell on financial hard times in his later years. He was a master printer and produced hundreds of group portraits and historical paintings, including The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Tulp (1632), The Military Company of Captain Frans Banning Cocq (1642) and Aristotle with a Bust of Homer (1653). His portraits -- including a lifelong trail of intriguing and rather frank self-portraits -- reveal his interest in psychological study and continue to be admired as landmarks in Western art. The Military Company of Captain Frans Banning Cocq is also known as "The Night Watch" because it was thought the painting depicted a nighttime scene. When the painting was cleaned in the 1940s it became obvious that it depicted a daytime scene... Louis Masreliez (Adrien Louis Masreliez) född 1748 i Paris död 19 mars 1810, var en svensk målare, tecknare, grafiker och inredningsarkitekt. Han var äldre bror till ornamentsbildhuggaren Jean Baptiste Masreliez och son till Jacques Adrien Masreliez, också han en ornamentsbildhuggare, som kallats till Sverige från Frankrike för att medverka vid uppförandet av Stockholms slott. Jacques Adrien Masreliez grundade således konstnärssläkten Masreliez i Sverige. Louis Masreliez kom till Sverige 1753. Han började sin utbildning vid Ritarakademien vid 10 års ålder. Vid ritarakademien saknades utbildning i måleri, varför Masreliez inledde studier vid Lorens Gottmans verkstad. 1769 tilldelades han ett statligt studiestipendium som han använde till en studieresa till Paris och Bologna. 1773 lämnade han Bologna och bosatte sig i Paris, där han bodde under åtta år. Han återvände till Sverige 1782, där han blev ledamot av Konstakademien och året därpå professor i historiemåleri. Han blev rektor för akademien 1802 och direktör 1805. MASSYS, Jan
Netherlandish Painter, ca.1509-1575 Painter, son of Quinten Metsys. More so than his brother Cornelis Massys, who was a less talented artist, Jan worked in the style of his father, whose studio he may have taken over following his death in 1530. Two years later, though still under the age of majority, Jan was admitted as a master in the Guild of St Luke in Antwerp. Like Cornelis, he seems to have left Antwerp immediately after attaining the status of master, for he is not mentioned again in the archives. It has been suggested on stylistic grounds that he worked for a period at Fontainebleau, but this is disputed. He was, in any case, back in Antwerp by 1536, when he took on an apprentice, Frans van Tuylt. In 1538 he married Anna van Tuylt, by whom he had three children.
